John 07:37-39

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY … March 7, John 7. (a day late)

John 07:37-39

37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, “If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink. 38 He who believes in me, as the scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.'” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

This is one of my favorite scriptures. Note the contrast – in John 4 Jesus speaks of a well of living water, which could symbolize sufficient grace to meet our own needs and the needs of our family. For many of us, this is where we are.

In John 7 Jesus offers a contrast … a supply of living water that is so vast that it overflows the boundaries of our lives to water the dry desert places all around us, transforming the world as it bursts into greenery. This is the potential of our spiritual life … a perfection which Jesus offers us – come to Him and drink, and let wells become great rivers.

So … as John Wesley put it … are you going on to perfection?
Are you a happy, satisfied well … or a overflowing, life giving river?
